BELGIUM STUDENT FOLKLORE
ASSOCIATIONS I just let the name in french. Regionales : like the nations. Student are "grouped" by town or region. Cercles : student are "grouped" usually by faculty (history, sciences...) Ordres : association of students and alumni.
ACCOUTREMENT AND HAT In Belgium, student from catholic universities (or high schools) wore the "calotte".
the student form "state universities" wore the penne. Student from Flanders usually wore a cap like the germans. They can also wore the bierpet like the germans.
When student are members of one Ordre or in the praesidium of a cercle or régional they wore the toga and the color chest band.
RITUAL AND PLEDGE CEREMONY I'm just talking about the societies in Belgium and a little in France. But I think it's the sames in most countries. We have certains knowledge reserved for the members. In one where i'm member we have a secret grip when we meet (to say "good morning") and we have an interdiction to use certain words when we speak. If the member use these words he have a "punition", he must drink a glass of beer. During pledge ceremony, we have rituals to be keep secret. So we have two kinds of meetings. Extern : we invite members of others fraternities. And internal : just for the members (usually the election and the inytronisation (ceremony during wich pledge become member)) The core of ours societies is self-reconnaissance and that all the members have pass through the sames "epreuve". This is for the rituals. we can discuss more about specific ritual. But it's not "very important". the pledge have to answer to some questions about the societu, the student folklore, aso... He must also present a personnal sketch (a song or somethings comics we call it "une guindaille") Then the "great brother" (godfather) of the pledge help the pledge to wear his toga.
Members have usually a toga, and a band of color worn from right shoulder to left hip. Pledge have the same band worn from left shoulder to right hip. Durng the ceremony we invert the band. It pass from left to right. The "secret" is more inside the word used then in the ritual itself. The ritual is often the same with small variations (see masson and chivalry ritual)
-----------------
It's a "hard translation" summary. but just ask for more specific things. Sometimes things seem to be evident because you know it but it's more confuse for "strangers".
--- Concerning collecting student folklore items or studentica as they said in Germany, i'm most interested by the "hat" and songbooks, even if i have almost every kind of objects. I don't want to make an inventory of what i have. i'll just list you what i can find more easily. Concerning songsbooks from Belgium, there is : - Petit bitu : no more edited - Petit bitu II : no more edited but we can maybe find some. - Delirium : Edited by an association of pharmacy students. Easy to find (i have one more in stock at home) - Bitu magnifique : replacing the Petit Bitu II. Very easy to find (september) - Florex : the "rolls Royce" !!! More then 3000pages. songs classed by cities/cercles/Ordres, aso.. They are some number in shop, but very expensive. The above songbooks are from students of catholic universities. - The fleurs du Mâle is from the ULB (Free University of Bruxelles)
As you maybe know in Belgium we have three national languages : french (like me), nederlands and german. The above books are all in french with some songs in others languages. There is some songbooks in Nederlands but i don't know how to have more. Usually Ordre and Cercles edit a little songbooks for the news students. More hard to collect because you have to know somebody in the association.
Regardind "hat". Catholic universities : the calotte, a small hat made in something like fur. The calotte is different depending of the cities. 1. In front of the calotte you have the flag of Belgium crossed with the flag of the town. 2. On the top of the calotte, a velvet cloth : - Bruxelles, Mons, Antwerpen : Red - Gent : White - Liège : Green
3. On the back of the calotte you have a small cloth and an insignia indicating in which faculty you are.
State universities : the penne. a cap with a great visor. color and shape depending of town and faculty.
Flemish : the cap with a little visor.
Bierpet is worn by members of somes members.
Faluche is a black beret worn by the student in France. a red one is worn (by the past) in Flanders.
------- FINLAND.
For Finland, it's quite the same system find "everywhere" Student are automaticcly member of the "global" university association. Then they can be member of an association depending of the faculty or depending of the town (called Nation). They wore a suit called coverall (like the F racers ;-) and from may to october a white cap. At home, i have some mails from a friend in Finland, i'll copy these for you.
